The Twelve Days of Hurricane Preparedness

American Red Cross Urges You to Prepare Now

Floridians can save money from June 1 through June 12 while preparing themselves for the 2007 Hurricane Season. Florida’s Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Exemption will allow individuals and families an opportunity to purchase certain disaster preparedness supplies without paying sales tax.

To help Floridians prepare for hurricanes and other disasters, Florida’s American Red Cross chapters are recognizing the Twelve Days of Hurricane Season.

Here is how the American Red Cross recommends Floridians began preparing their supplies:

On the First Day, purchase a water container. Having an ample supply of clean water is a priority in an emergency.

On the Second Day, purchase a NOAA Weather Radio. It can provide continuous broadcasts of the latest weather information directly from a National Weather Services Office.

On the Third Day, purchase a Fire Extinguisher. Install A-B-C type Fire Extinguishers
in the home and teach household members how to use them.

On the Fourth Day, purchase Plastic Sheeting. It is a vital part of a Family Disaster Supplies Kit.

On the Fifth Day, purchase a supply of Canned Food. Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.

On the Sixth Day, purchase a Generator. It can be a convenient source of power after a hurricane strikes. Do properly install and use safely.

On the Seventh Day, purchase a flashlight. It can become a very important tool during and after disaster strikes. Make sure to have spare batteries.

On the Eighth Day, purchase a complete Family Disaster Supplies Kit. Once disaster hits, you won’t have time to shop and search for supplies.

On the Ninth Day, purchase a Sleeping Bag. It will provide you with extra comfort when you arrive at an American Red Cross shelter.

On the Tenth Day, purchase a First Aid Kit. Every individual and family should have a First Aid Kit in their home, vehicle and on their boat.

On the Eleventh Day, purchase needed supplies to install Hurricane Shutters on every window of the home. It will help to mitigate the damage due to a storm’s severe winds.

On the Twelfth Day, purchase Duct Tape. It is one of the many items that should be in a Family Disaster Supplies Kit.
